BVCF Learning Award

The BVCF Grade 12 Learning Awards are for students completing secondary school this school year and planning post-secondary studies. Awards are for assistance with tuition fees and other educational expenses. Awards are based on achievements, volunteer work, community and leadership activities.

VALUE: Numerous awards. $1,000.00 to $2,000.00 per award. Number and size of awards will be determined by BVCF based on number of qualified applicants.

CRITERIA

1. Awards are offered to students graduating this school year from accredited schools within BVCF area.

2. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, landed immigrants or permanent residents who reside full time within BVCF area.

3. Applicants must be planning to attend colleges or universities in B.C.

4. The post-secondary institution must be one where students are eligible to receive student loans. See list of designated schools  Here

5. If successful, applicant must submit proof of registration OR official receipt of tuition fees to receive funds.

6. Awards must be claimed within 18 months of notification.

Wetzin’kwa Community Forest Corporation Grade 12 Learning Award

 

The Wetzin’kwa Community Forest Corporation has partnered with the BVCF to offer Learning Awards. The Wetzin’kwa Grade 12 Learning Awards are for students completing secondary school this school year and planning post-secondary studies. They are based on achievements, volunteer work, community and leadership activities.

VALUE: $1,000.00 per award, for 3 awards.

CRITERIA

1. Awards are offered to students completing secondary school this school year at accredited schools within School District #54 (Bulkley Valley).

2. Awards are offered to one student from Telkwa, one student from Smithers and one student with Wet’suwet’en heritage.

3. Preference may be given to students who will be studying a field related to forest or environmental studies and/or who have exhibited strong sense of community and leadership. However, all areas of study will be considered.

4. The post-secondary institution must be one where students are eligible to receive student loans. See list of designated schools Here

5. Students must be Canadian Citizens, landed immigrants or permanent residents who reside full time within BVCF area.

6. If successful, applicant must submit written confirmation of registration OR official receipt of tuition fees to receive funds.

7. Awards must be claimed within 18 months of notification.

Alec Duncan Cooper Awards

Alec Duncan Cooper’s generous bequest to the BVCF for two Learning Awards is a legacy for Bulkley Valley students in perpetuity.

The Alec Duncan Cooper Award in Physics is for the top graduating student in Physics at Smithers Secondary School.
The Alec Duncan Cooper Award in Mathematics is for the top graduating student in Mathematics at Smithers Secondary School.

Nick Van Arem Endowment Fund

The Nick Van Arem Award for courage, spirit and determination was established by family and friends to honour the memory of Nick Van Arem. It is for a student of Smithers Secondary School who exhibits courage and determination in adapting to their own physical and/or emotional challenges.

Please note: This award is not open for application. The recipient is selected by teachers and counsellors of SSS.

Anyone wishing to contribute to this award may do so at Smithers Secondary School. Cheques can be made out to School District 54 (Nick Van Arem Memorial Award). As well, contributions can be made to the BVCF with the proviso that funds are for the Nick Van Arem Award.

Fritz Pfeiffer Adult Learning Awards

 

The Fritz Pfeiffer Adult Learning Awards are for named for the Telkwa gentleman who donated funds for these awards. He wanted to support students who work very hard, show a desire to learn and exhibit initiative. Awards are for assistance with tuition fees and other educational expenses. They are based on achievements, volunteer work, and community, school and leadership activities.

 

Numerous awards. Minimum of $2,000.00 each. Number and size of awards will be determined by BVCF based on number of qualified applicants.

CRITERIA

1. Applicants must be 19 years or older and out of high school for at least one year.

2. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, landed immigrants or permanent residents whose permanent address is within BVCF area.

3. Applicants must be planning to begin or continue studies at colleges or universities in B.C.

4. The post-secondary institution must be one where students are eligible to receive student loans. See list of designated schools at https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/post-secondary/designated-schools.html

5. If successful, applicant must submit proof of registration OR official receipt of tuition fees to receive funds.

6. Awards must be claimed within 18 months of notification.

The following Preferences may be applied depending on the size of the applicant pool and amount of available funds:

  • Individuals who haven’t completed an undergraduate degree or diploma.
  • Mature individuals pursuing education later in life.
  • Individuals who currently reside in the Bulkley Valley area.
  • Individuals with a volunteering and community building background.

Please note: there is no requirement for an applicant to meet all the listed preferences and BVCF encourages applicants who meet the requirements listed above to apply. However, identifying if you meet the preferences listed will make for a stronger application.

GEORGE TUGNUM ADULT LEARNING AWARD

 

AWARD

The George Tugnum Adult Learning Award was created by his son, Curtis, in memory of his father.  This award is in recognition of George Tugnum’s accomplishments, the most notable one being his return to high school in 1968 after leaving school in 1943.  He graduated from Smithers Secondary School in 1970, alongside his son.  The award is to support and apply for students who returned to high school to graduate or upgrade to qualify for postsecondary education.  The award is for assistance with tuition and other educational expenses.  The award will be $1,000.00.

CRITERIA

  1. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older and have returned to a School District 54 educational institution or a college within the area serviced by the BVCF after an absence of at least two years and has already completed Grade 12 or upgrading in at least three academic subjects.
  2. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, landed immigrants or permanent residents whose permanent address is within the BVCF area.
  3. Applicants must be planning to begin or continue studies in the in the field of Health Care and Social Assistance, as defined by WorkBC, at a post-secondary institution in Canada where students are eligible to receive student loans.  See list of designated schools at: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/post-secondary/designated-schools.html 
  4. If successful, the applicant must submit proof of registration OR official receipt of tuition fees to receive funds.
  5. Awards must be claimed within 18 months of notification.

The following Preferences may be applied depending on the size of the applicant pool:

  • The applicant has not completed an undergraduate degree or post-secondary diploma;
  • The applicant has demonstrated academic achievement while maintaining employment and/or retaining significant responsibility for other individuals such as children, elders, or other dependents.

Please note: there is no requirement for an applicant to meet the listed preferences and the BVCF encourages applicants who meet the criteria listed above.  However, identifying if you meet the preferences listed will make for a stronger application.
